Labourer or DRO of the Year 2024

NFDC CEO Duncan Rudall (Left) & Darren Wickham (Right)

Darren joined Tilley and Barrett in 2019 with limited experience in demolition but brought something far more valuable—determination, enthusiasm, and a vision for personal growth. Darren has risen to become a shining example of what hard work and mentorship can achieve withing the industry.

Under the mentorship of Jason Davey, Darren quickly demonstrated immense promise. His responsibilities has expanded significantly, including overseeing teams, leading safety briefings, and implementing initiatives like “Take 5” discussions to ensure site safety and efficiency.

With certifications such as the Site Supervisor Training Scheme, CCDO Chargehand (White) Card, and demolition excavator driver qualifications, Darren has more qualifications and skills under his belt now which is a testament to continuous resilience, hard work, and the power of mentorship.

Darren is now a apprentice supervisor and on his way to become a project manager with Tilley and Barrett and the demolition industry reaping the rewards of his dedication.

We were proud to honour Darren work ethic as last year’s NFDC Labourer or DRO of the Year.

ADO or Chargehand of the Year 2024

NFDC CEO Duncan Rudall (Left) & Wayne Harrison (Right)

Every industry has its unsung heroes, and in the demolition world, Wayne stands out as a shining example of dedication and leadership. Recognised as the ‘Advanced Demolition Operative (ADO) or Chargehand of the Year’, Wayne’s story is one of hard work, passion, and a commitment to both personal and professional growth at Connell Brothers Demolition.

Starting each day before dawn, Wayne not only ensures his own readiness but also picks up and drops off colleagues, often visiting the yard to collect or deliver crucial items. Once on-site, Wayne’s eagerness to learn and share his knowledge with others sets him apart. His feedback during daily briefings and toolbox talks reflects his commitment to safety and efficiency, earning him the trust and respect of both site managers and peers.

His leadership shone during the removal of two link bridges in Manchester city centre—a high-stakes project requiring hot cutting in close proximity to occupied buildings. Wayne’s role in planning, selecting equipment, and executing the works was instrumental in the project’s success.

Beyond his technical skills, Wayne is a mentor to less experienced operatives, and now has stepped into a supervisory role, a testament to his drive and the trust. His journey serves as an inspiration, highlighting the vital role skilled operatives play in driving the industry forward.

Wayne’s recognition as ADO or Chargehand of the Year is a celebration of his achievements and a reminder of the incredible talent within the demolition sector.

Supervisor of the Year

NFDC CEO Duncan Rudall (Left) & Zak Tetley (Right)

Zak’s story is one of determination, growth, and leadership. Starting with Total Reclaims Demolition at just 16 years old, he embarked on his career with no formal qualifications but a drive to succeed. After completing the NDTG Trailblazer Apprenticeship Scheme in 2016, Zak quickly rose through the ranks, earning his CCDO Supervisor (Gold) Card status and proving his expertise on some of the industry’s most complex projects.

Zak thrives on challenges. From managing HS2’s stringent requirements to coordinating social value initiatives in Cambridge, he ensures safety, collaboration, and innovation are at the forefront. Notable achievements include leading the paperless site documentation system rollout and pioneering risk awareness campaigns for cyclists near work zones.

Drawing on personal experiences, Zak serves as TRD’s Mental Health Ambassador, embodying the NFDC’s focus on wellbeing being an advocate and shoulder to lean on for his colleagues. Zak doesn’t stop at the site. He created and manages the TRD football team, strengthening camaraderie and promoting mental health through sport.

Zak exemplifies the best of the demolition industry—competence, compassion, and creativity. His win as NFDC Supervisor of the Year 2024 is a well-deserved recognition of his remarkable contributions.

Manager of the Year 2024

NFDC CEO Duncan Rudall (Left) & Darren Lynch (Right)

Darren’s win is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the opportunities provided by the CCDO card scheme with NDTG. Starting as a Demolition Labourer in 2007, Darren has risen through the ranks, becoming one of City Demolition’s leading site managers.

Darren’s leadership has shone brightly in high-profile projects, none more remarkable than his work on the former Vauxhall Aftersales facility in Luton. Overseeing the 55-acre site, Darren led the demolition of 200,000m² of steel-framed warehouses and hardstanding, all within a 26-week schedule. His ability to coordinate a workforce of over 50 personnel daily, manage service disconnections, and ensure sustainability by repurposing 90,000 cubic meters of materials showcases his exceptional technical expertise and dedication to excellence.

Not only is Darren recognised for his project delivery, but his proactive approach to safety and community engagement has set a benchmark for the industry.

By holding regular meetings with local residents and businesses, Darren ensured the community felt informed and valued throughout the Luton project. His initiative in salvaging and donating reusable materials further highlights his commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
