John F Hunt celebrates its 40th Anniversary

40 years in business, riding out four recessions is a remarkable achievement.

It all began in 1982 when John Hall established John F Hunt Contracting from a tiny box room at the back of his house in Shenfield, Essex!  Fast forward to 2022. Little did he know that this diminutive business, who’s assets amounted to 2 sets of burning gear, a very well used forklift truck and a Volvo Estate, would grow into a Group of 18 substantial Companies and Divisions spanning the whole of the UK!

John, Chairman and owner of the Group said, “It seems like only yesterday that I was sitting at that tiny desk with a landline phone in one hand and a telephone directory in the other…I didn’t even have a trendy 80’s Filofax…where did the time go?!!”

From demolition and dismantling John F Hunt diversified, investing heavily in people, plant, activities and hire businesses that worked independently, but were able to support the growing and increasingly complex needs of their demolition and civil engineering projects.

Moving into specialist areas such as ground remediation, nuclear decommissioning, and reinforced concrete structures, brought new dimensions to the group. Fast and limitless developments in technology improved efficiency, health, safety and communication. Their I.T. company facilitated easier collaboration, developing bespoke apps and a rapid move towards paperless offices as part of their drive to reduce their environmental impact.

John continued “I am proud of how we have sculpted the country’s skyline over the last 40 years, especially with the removal of some of those dreadful 60’s tower blocks! It also enables me to acknowledge all the strong and loyal relationships with clients, suppliers and staff that we have developed over the years and thank everyone for their unwavering support, which has got us to where we are today.  I understand that we are regarded as the ‘dirty end’ of the construction sector, so I am also proud of how we have been implementing smarter solutions for our clients and taking bold action to clean up our part of the industry for the future… here’s to the next 40!”
