World Suicide Prevention Day – 10th September 2019

“People are often reluctant to intervene, for many reasons, including a fear of not knowing what to say. It is important to remember, there is no specific formula. Empathy, compassion, genuine concern, knowledge of resources and a desire to help are key to preventing a tragedy.”
International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) – Take a Minute

In the demolition and construction industries today, we have greater awareness than ever before of the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing within our workforces. Giant leaps have, and are, being made in ending the stigma around mental health, opening our minds to better understand mental illness and providing resources, know-how and support for individuals in our teams when they are ‘not OK’.

Nobody working in our industry today wants to hear again the shocking statistics that every day one in three construction workers takes their own lives, but NFDC will continue to drum the message home that positive mental health matters and its everyone’s responsibility to take care of themselves, and each other. We will break the silence.

10th September, is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every 10th September, for the past 15 years, individuals, teams and companies alike join to observe this day and raise awareness across the world.

NFDC signed the Building Mental Health Charter sure, but our commitment goes beyond a signature on a piece of paper, it’s the action that counts. We implore you, our Members, to please use the resources made available to you by your Federation and/or use the many third-party resources we’re signposting below to be informed, be aware and be compassionate.

Just start the conversation – you could change the course of somebody’s life.
