Every year on 10th September, people across the globe observe this day as World Suicide Prevention Day, with individuals and organisations participating in activities and messages to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.
At the beginning of September and in plenty of time to help you observe World Suicide Prevention Day, NFDC issued Members with a Mental Health Kit via post, containing resources for you to use with your employees, including stress awareness posters, pocket cards signposting support lines, toolbox talks and leaflets. We would urge you to use the kit and its contents – aimed to help you to show your employees that there is no stigma around mental health, its OK not to be OK and that support is available.
As you know, NFDC and its Members supports The Lighthouse Club – a charity specifically for those working in construction to gain the support they need – whether financially or emotionally. Our commitment to helping Lighthouse Club keep their 24/7 helpline up and running is long-term – we would encourage you to ensure your workforce knows about The Lighthouse Club and the support it provides.
The importance of mental health and wellbeing may have risen to the top of the construction and demolition industry agenda seemingly over the past two years – and even more acutely since the outbreak of Coronavirus that brought isolation, health and financial suffering for many, but will remain a priority for our industry for our foreseeable future.
NFDC will continue to raise awareness and signpost resources to help those struggling with mental health. In turn, we ask that you help us to spread the message with your employees and across your networks.
Would you take just one minute and fifty-three seconds to watch the International Association for Suicide Prevention’s short film – Step Closer? Better still, would you share it with your employees and on your social media channels?
